Abby Wasserman leads four intimate writing groups in Mill Valley, California.
Groups meet from September through May. Abby also offers two intensive writing retreats a year.
The Thursday Groups at O'Hanlon Center for the Arts are for all levels of prose writers. They provide a supportive and stimulating environment, and challenge writers to work with honesty, courage and heart. We do prompted freewrites, read aloud to one another, and discuss our work. Each member has the opportunity to bring pieces in for critiques.
The morning group meets every Thursday (with some seasonal breaks) from 10 a.m. to noon. Spaces are available.
The afternoon group meets from 2 to 4 p.m. This group is currently full.
Participants sign up for 8 sessions at a time, $160 for non-members of O'Hanlon Center, $144 for members.
The biweekly evening group meets every other Wednesday, 6:30-8:30 p.m. All participants in this group are working on long pieces, memoir or novel. Participants sign up for 6 sessions at a time: $120 non-members, $108 members. This group is currently at capacity.
The once-monthly evening group meets every third Wednesday (with one exception), 6 to 8 p.m. at Abby's home in Mill Valley. A few places are left in this newly formed group. Writers work on longer projects, such as memoir or novel. $180 for six sessions, payable at the first session. The group will meet Feb. 18, March 18, April 15, May 20, June 3 and June 17, 2009.
The Writing Groups collaborate to present a public reading at the O'Hanlon Center once a year. The next reading will be in May 2009. Check the Center's web site, www.ohanloncenter.org for the date and time.
TESTIMONIALS
"I love going to Abby Wasserman's writing group at the O'Hanlon Center. Abby provides an ideal writing environment. It is safe and encouraging, plus Abby is able to zero in with her feedback in a way that makes it fun and easy to move forward. She deserves big thanks from me (and Penguin) for helping to build my book 'The Church of 80% Sincerity.'"
David Roche, Author, Performer
"Abby Wasserman is a wonderful writing teacher. Her thought-provoking writing prompts, gentle prodding, and keen powers of observation have facilitated deep and wondrous explorations, sparking the perfect grist for the writer's mill. I have so much appreciated her equanimity and non-judgmental posture, and her overt appreciation for her students' unique styles and raw talents. She has consistently provided a safe yet challenging haven for writers who require a weekly dose of camaraderie and an opportunity to put pen to paper and share their stories aloud."
Margery Kreitman, Writer, Performer
"Thank you so much for your leadership, kind direction, and gentle prodding. We truly appreciate what you offer us: a path to our own voice."
